What a good software company in Oman should show you

A good software company in Oman can show you working software it has built, explain who will do the work, agree a fixed scope and price for a first phase, and put ownership, hosting and support in writing. It also understands local needs such as Arabic and English screens, Oman VAT, and payroll rules. Ask for these before you compare prices, because the cheapest quote often leaves them out and adds them later as extra cost.

Checks to make before you shortlist

These checks take an hour and remove most of the risk.

  • Ask to see live software the company has built, and to try it
  • Ask for a client reference you can phone, with their permission
  • Find out who exactly will build your project and whether they are in-house or subcontracted
  • Check how long the company has been supplying software and whether it still supports older projects
  • Confirm the company is registered in Oman and can issue a proper tax invoice
  • Look for products it builds and runs itself, which shows it can maintain software for years

How to compare quotes properly

Two quotes for the same project can differ by a lot because they cover different things. Ask each company to price the same written scope, and compare what is included, not just the total.

A sound quote splits the work into phases, names what you receive at the end of each phase, and says when payments fall due. Be careful with a single large price for an unclear scope, because every change after that becomes a new charge.

  • Is there a written scope with screens, features and reports listed?
  • Is the first phase small enough to be tested by real users within weeks?
  • Are testing, training and documentation included?
  • How are changes after sign-off priced?
  • What is the payment schedule, and is any payment tied to a delivered result?

Ownership, hosting and support

Agree these points in writing before the project starts. Disputes in software projects usually come from what was assumed and never written down.

  • Who owns the source code, and do you get a copy at handover?
  • Where is the software hosted, who pays for hosting, and who holds the domain and accounts?
  • How are backups made and how fast can the system be restored?
  • What support is included after launch, for how long, and how quickly does the company respond?
  • Can another developer take over later if you need to change supplier?

Oman-specific points to check

Software for an Oman business has local requirements that an overseas template may miss. Ask the company how it handles each one, and ask to see it working rather than accepting a promise.

  • Arabic and English screens, printouts and invoices, including right-to-left layouts
  • Oman VAT on invoices and reports
  • E-invoicing: Oman's Fawtara system is being introduced in phases from August 2026, so ask how your software will prepare for it and check the Tax Authority's announcements for the date that applies to your business
  • Payroll rules, including the Wage Protection System file for salary payments
  • Local support hours and the ability to visit your site if needed
  • Integration with the systems and devices you already use, such as accounting software, WhatsApp, RFID or biometric devices

Warning signs

Be cautious if a company shows any of the following.

  • It cannot show any software it has built, or the examples are screenshots you cannot try
  • It promises a fixed price and date without asking detailed questions about your process
  • It will not agree that you own the source code or your data
  • The price is far below every other quote
  • It has no clear plan for support after launch
  • It uses claims such as the best company in Oman without any evidence
