How to choose a CCTV camera system for a business in Muscat

Start with what each camera must achieve

Before comparing brands or megapixels, list what each camera position is for. A camera at a shop door that must identify faces needs a narrower field of view and more pixels on target than a camera watching a whole car park.

A useful way to write the requirement for each position is: detect (something is there), recognise (a known person), or identify (enough detail to prove who it is).

Resolution and lens go together

A higher-resolution camera with a very wide lens can still give less detail on a face than a lower-resolution camera with the right focal length. Varifocal lenses let the installer adjust the view on site.

• Wide lenses: overview of rooms and open areas
• Narrower or varifocal lenses: entrances, cash points, gates
• Dedicated plate-capture cameras: vehicle entry and exit

Plan for low light and Oman’s outdoor conditions

Check the infrared range against the real distance to the target, and whether the scene has streetlights or complete darkness. Outdoor cameras need an ingress protection (IP) rating suitable for dust and weather, and positioning that avoids pointing directly into strong sunlight.

Size recording from the retention you need

Decide how many days of footage you need to keep, then size the recorder and disks from camera count, resolution, frame rate and compression. Recording on motion or events can extend retention, but continuous recording is safer for critical areas.

Treat CCTV as a network system

IP cameras are usually powered by PoE switches. Check that the switch has enough ports and PoE budget, and keep cameras on their own VLAN so video traffic and devices are separated from office computers.

Secure remote access

Change default passwords, create separate user accounts, keep firmware updated, and avoid exposing the recorder directly to the internet without protection.

Questions to ask any CCTV installer

• Will you provide a camera schedule showing each position and its purpose?
• How was storage calculated, and how many days will be retained?
• What happens to recording during a power cut?
• Who receives the admin credentials at handover?
• What does maintenance include after installation?
